NORTHERN LIGHTS

TINA PHAM by ALEX BARREDO

MODEL : TINA PHAM | PHOTOGRAPHER : ALEX BARREDO | HAIR & MAKE UP : KSENIA OGOLIKHINA | STYLING : SIMAN HEER
For this shoot we took the team of photographer Alex Barredo, model/actress Tina Pham, make up artist Ksenia Ogolikhina and stylist Siman Heer on a little 1.5 hr road trip north of Vancouver to Brandywine Falls. Originally, we had planned to make the trek down to the bottom of the falls but seeing as we had a lot of equipment we called an audible and decided to stay near the top and avoid any risk of injury to one of the members of the squad or any damage to the equipment.

It was a beautiful day, so lighting was no issue. During the process we got to familiarize ourselves with Tina and Ksenia a little better. Which as a result has led to collaborations on other projects. Photographer Alex Barredo, is diverse and can capture not only subjects, but he shoots a wide range ooh photography from architectural, automotive to landscape. So combining the landscape at Brandywine Falls with the idea of capturing Tina in the “wild” was something he was very well suited for.

Having since worked with Ksenia on numerous occasions, it is easy to see the how talented she is. Shooting on location can take someone out of their element but she embraced the challenge and added her touch which turned out amazing. From a touch of glam to the tribal war paint, she really added that extra touch we needed for the “wildness” effect. We can’t say enough about Ksenia and the work she does on a regular basis. Styling was left to Siman, as this was a change up from what she is normally used to styling. Having had a few pieces prior, mixed with some accessories she was able to use, she too help make this shoot a success.

Below you can read through the interview with Tina and get more of an understanding of who she is away from modeling and acting. We hope you enjoy the shoot. After much delay, Just Breeze Magazine proudly presents NORTHERN LIGHTS: Tina Pham by Alex Barredo.

JB Who are you and where are you from?

TP I’m Tina Pham and I’m born in Prince Rupert, BC

JB Describe yourself using only 3 words.

TP Daring. Raw. Passionate.

JB What is your favourite aspect about modeling/acting and how/when did you first get started?

TP I started acting/modeling when I was 18. My favorite aspect of acting and modeling is creating moments that people are able to feel and relate to at home.. Being raw/authentic and moving people through the art of acting and connecting with the audience, making them cry, mad, scared, etc. is something I want to master one day. And with modeling; I love shooting simple photos, black and white, photos with depths of emotions both love and/or sad expressions because it makes the photo beautiful and tells a story.

JB Well put. You’ve created some great stories in the past. We too aim to evoke some sort of emotion with any of the visuals we create.

Which models currently inspire you?

TP Cara Delevingne. She’s a fearless model; she was working on a campaign called “stop labeling, start living” I loved it! She’s a tomboy, she’s very unique and most of all, seems comfortable in her own skin. Eva Gii is also an amazing model and role model, she’s very real, talking about how she doesn’t have too many friends or she goes through depression sometimes; she likes to be naked. I think she’s very empowering and real.

JB Nice. Both of them do a great job providing inspiration whether it’s visually or just by the way they lead their lives.

Outside of modeling, what else inspires you?

STP I like to question everything and I am always learning and discovering. Is it cheesy to say almost everything inspires me in some way?

JB No. I think we should all be inspired by people and things around us.

What was the last gift you got for someone? And who was it for?

TP He’s a best friend of mine and he’s very easy going.. He enjoys scotch, cigarettes, and his dog. So I got him that and treats for his dog.

JB How would you describe your sense of style?

TP I love good quality leather in dresses, jackets, pants, purse.. everything! I love dark colors, mostly black. My style is edgy and chic is the best way to describe it.

JB If you could sing one song on American Idol, what would it be?

TP I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston without a doubt!

JB If you could sing one song on American Idol, what would it be?

TP I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston without a doubt!

JB What are the top 3 most played songs in your music player?

TP Lane 8 – Fingerprint

Calvin Harris – Love Now

Stwo – Haunted (Feat. Sevdaliza)

JB If you could be any animal, which animal would you choose? Why?

TP Koala bear because they’re so cuddly and loveable and I just want to be loved all the time and snuggle!!

JB Gotta love those Koala bears. They get mad sleep. Lucky little guys.

What’s the most money you’ve ever drunkenly spent at McDonald’s?

TP Hmm, not so much but my order is sooo greasy. Quarter pounders are my favorite. I think it helps the hangover in the morning.

JB You’re right about that. Nothing like some greasy food to help with hangover.

What does your workout routine currently consist of? How do you stay motivated?

TP I placed 6th in a bodybuilding competition when I was 15 pounds heavier three years ago. I still use the same training program except less competitive of course. It a power lifting program so a lot of compound, explosive movements like dead lifts, chest/shoulder press, and squats..

JB Who is the most inspirational figure to you and why?

TP Michael Jackson. I have a picture of me dressed as him when I was 15! The few things all of my inspirational figures have in common are that they are/were fearless and original. They owned who they are and what they believed in even if people didn’t understand it. They’re unique in their own ways but they did what felt right which set standards, examples, and goals for all of us. They’re different and some were alone but kept believing. People like them make me feel very confident in being who I am and taking charge in what I want in my life.

JB Well said. MJ was and is an inspiration to a lot of people all over the world. Good choice.

How would you define love?

TP Love has no boundaries. Nowadays, there are so many standards and expectations.. That’s not love. It’s about being able to look someone in the eye, whoever it may be and kindly smile, connect with that person. Love is passion and being open and honest with you you are..  Love is an open book, it is not judgmental.

JB Well said Tina. Love is very hard to put into words. Since we are on the topic of love.. What is the first thing about a guy that sparks your interest?

TP Passion and their energy. Confidence.. and by confidence I mean someone who doesn’t care what people think, even me. That drives me nuts.

JB That’s a good confidence to have. Many people conform to society to fit “in” or not to stick out of the bunch. But respect to those who are completely comfortable in their own skin and do things their own way regardless of how they are viewed by others. Be your OWN person.

TP It’s a type of self-respect I really admire; when a man tells me the utmost truth about himself and can put me in place and stands his ground in who he is and what he believes in even when I don’t agree. I think that is so hot.

JB Definitely a great quality to have for anyone.

How do you see society transcending with the new generation constantly being glued to their smart phones? How do you see this changing? What effect do you think this will have in the next 5 years?

TP Social media is really tough. I have tough times with it too. When I was younger I used to go through phases of deleting my Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram.. Everyone wants to be liked and accepted and I remember being too glued to my phone so I’d delete it; get things done and then re-downloaded it when I was ready. I’ve finally found a balance now.

Like me, I see it getting worst before it gets better and people find their balance. Social media can be tough but it is an amazing platform to share your opinions and platform and that’s what I use it as now.

Especially with young kids, I want to remind them that people only post their perfect moments. No one lives a perfect life; that’s the most important piece. Some people can be depressed and you wouldn’t know it.

JB That’s a strong message. Nobody is perfect and sadly it is easy for the youth to lose sight of that.

Of all the terrible things humans are responsible for in this world, what do you feel tops the list?

TP Censorship; for example, the censorship of human bodies, death, books, history, even human day-day conversations when people “sugar-coat” or lie. We don’t need the world to be anymore sensitive and people need to get used to always facing the truth. It is life and the truth hurts but that is how we will improve in anything; with your coworker, your lover, your friend, even yourself… When subjects or people lie, others get hurt, information gets twisted and society falls apart and can cause bad karma. Here’s one thing that bothers me the most. Censorship in human bodies. Our bodies are natural; why blind it from our children when they their first sight of you coming into the world was bare naked? Why is it that we hide that from our kids as if it’s sacred. It’s not, it’s natural. Why couldn’t we teach them that this is natural so when they see it as an adult it doesn’t cause an instant shock, that fantasy of naked bodies wouldn’t exist and men and women would be more confident in their own bodies.. That’s one thing checked off the society standard/conformity list to making human beings happier people. Rape statistics might be lower because naked bodies wouldn’t be sexualized or fantasized about. It should be a normal thing to see.

JB List one thing you would do to make the world a better place.

TP My biggest passion is to be a motivational speaker. I want to help people be comfortable being themselves and taking action for their own happiness, also being kind and loving. I’m producing a short inspirational film this fall that I’m excited for. I’m making it happen. 🙂

I want to help people connect and I want people to be happy. Seeing people happy makes me happy.

JB That’s really touching. Glad we got the opportunity to meet and work together. Proud to consider ourselves friends of yours. 😊

In your opinion, what do you feel is the biggest crisis or injustice in the world today?

TP Social, health, gender, racial, economic, income inequality, the list goes on… Inequality is a result of too much hate; people who think they’re better than others and go far as ruin people’s lives and is the cause to every single crisis and injustice in the world. If I could get on a microphone right now; I’d tell everyone to sit the fuck down and get off the pedestal. No one is better than anyone no matter what class, religion or ability you have. I don’t care that you’re richer or smarter than me, we’re all gonna die the same way we’re not gonna matter. You should value everyone because no matter who they are; they know something you don’t know.

JB That’s a great answer Tina! Inequality has been an issue for as long as we can remember. The fact that some people get to eat and some don’t is just an example of how much needs to be changed in this world.
