Discovered by accident, Atlantic Records artist Melanie Martinez is not your average cookie cutter Top 40 glam girl like Taylor Swift, but she’s heating up the music scene and definitely worth getting to know. She made her debut while competing on the third season of NBC’s The Voice, gaining her a huge public following. With barely any radio airplay and promotion the young, kinda weird, and super funky newcomer has been selling out shows everywhere she goes. Her voice is tearful, powerful, whispery, a bit sardonic, and completely hypnotizing.
Born Melanie Adele Martinez, the American singer and songwriter, appeared on The Voice and captivated the audience and panel judges. She auditioned singing Britney Spears’ “Toxic” and three of the four judges: Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green, and Blake Shelton, hit the “I Want You” button. Ultimately Martinez chose Adam Levine to be her coach. Although she was eliminated by audience vote in week five, the young artist was grateful for the experience and stated, “I never expected to get this far and this is beyond what I’ve ever dreamed of. I’m just so glad I got to express who I am as an artist and really touch people’s hearts because that was the ultimate goal.”
After her departure from The Voice, she began working independently on original material. She released her debut single, “Dollhouse” on April 22, 2014 with a music video which currently has over 36 million views as of April 2016. The song was produced and co-written by NYC songwriting duo Kinetics & One Love. Shortly after, Martinez announced that she’d been signed to Atlantic Records and that she would be going on tour.
Her music has seen great praise in all areas of the industry and her song “Carousel” was featured in a preview for FX’s miniseries American Horror Story: Freak Show, with the theme song also being a riff on the song. With the success of her first EP, Melanie went on to release her debut album under Atlantic Records.
Her debut album Cry Baby made an incredible chart debut, premiering at #5 on the top albums chart and #6 on the Billboard 200. Cry Baby follows the 20-year-old Long Island native’s 2014 breakthrough, Dollhouse EP. It had an explosive first week ascending to #1 on the Billboard Current Alternative Album chart. The album’s success follows a remarkable pre-sale in which Cry Baby pre-orders reached #1 on iTunes Top Alternative Albums.
Cry Baby is among the most inventive debut albums and is an unforgettable collection of provocative pop framed as a modern fairy tale, complete with storybook illustrations, and a dramatic structure that takes listeners on a dark journey through the life of its title character. My personal favorite of the whole album is- ALL OF IT, but if I had to choose I would have to choose between “Pity Party” and “Mrs. Potato Head.” Her melodies and strong beats combine to keep you holding on to every word from start to finish.
It’s no wonder she’s skyrocketed to the top of the charts. Her music is a break from the norm and her fans are all kinds of loving it. With little to no promotion, the stunning singer is a great performer and undeniable presence on stage. Her shows have sold out everywhere she goes. Her music videos have garnered her worldwide fame and made her an online phenomenon, with them individually exceeding 21 million views.
Not the typical pop star, this young artist has a very successful career ahead of her and she’s worth putting on your radar. Melanie completed taking her Cry Baby Album on tour around the globe with stops in Europe, Canada, and the United States.
“I’m nuts, baby, I’m mad. The craziest friend that you’ve ever had. You think I’m psycho, you think I’m gone. Tell the psychiatrist something is wrong. Over the bend, entirely bonkers. You like me best when I’m off my rocker. Tell you a secret, I’m not alarmed. So what if I’m crazy? The best people are crazy!“
