For this shoot we had been in talks with LA based photographer Dylan Prebich about collaborating. We discussed a few different concepts after having linked him with our home girl Tanisha Amber from Vancouver for a shoot. A few different locations were in mind but it quickly got narrowed down to 2. The first was Joshua Tree National Park. The second was a seasonal blooming flower field. It turned out that we just missed the seasonal window for the flower field so our team settled for Joshua Tree.

After throwing around ideas, we talked to Karsen about the concept and she was on board. To say we are fans of her is an understatement. At first glance, Karsen is stunning and we felt she would be perfect for the idea in mind. You may recognize her from the numerous appearances and her affiliation to the staff over at Arsenic Magazine. Karsen’s witty captions on her photos paired with her dark humour crack us up. It was a real pleasure to be able to learn more about her and hear some of her outspoken opinions.

We used this shoot as an opportunity to collaborate with Tatiyana Elias for make up. We had chatted briefly about working together before, but it finally came to fruition on this project. You can get the sense of someone’s vibes through interactions and we had been looking forward to creating with Tatiyana as she was just as excited as we were to be working with her. For wardrobe and styling, Sarah Temperilli came through. We had found her on Instagram and thought she would provide a great touch for some different looks. She made our vision come to life! Sarah has since been busy working on her brand The Maneater and we wish her the best of luck! Being able to create with this team was truly a pleasure. Hope you enjoy the photos and our exclusive interview with Karsen below. Without further delay, Just Breeze Magazine proudly presents EQUINOX: Karsen Rigby by Dylan Prebich.

JB Who are you and where are you from?

KR I’m Karsen Rigby, a model/actress from Novato, CA.

JB Describe yourself using 3 words.

KR Savvy, unconventional, capricious

JB Very unique! What would be your most recent case of your unconventional-ism?

KR I’d say my entire life here in Los Angeles. I moved away from home at 15, I’m not married, I plan to adopt a child with or without a partner. I just have no interest in living a traditional life.

JB Am I hearing this right? A girl that doesn’t dream of a horse and carriage fairy tale? On the real though, that’s very admirable of you. Respect. It takes a lot today to let go and live free and be yourself. Most people are caught up with pleasing and appealing to others who don’t even matter. Whether it’s seeking approval or just putting alot of stock in the opinions of others. Any advice for those who are too timid to cut ties with conformity?

KR Most people say life is short. It feels incredibly long to me. Long or short you should fill it with what you want, not what you think others want. If something feels wrong for you do something else. It can be hard to feel like you’re disappointing people with your choices, but ultimately that’s their problem. Not yours. Feel bad for a second and then let it go.

JB Wise words. #LetItGo What is your favourite aspect of modeling/acting and how/when did you first get started?

KR It depends who I’m shooting with. If it’s a photographer I know well then I enjoy the actual shoot and getting into the posing and trying new things. But ultimately I like the editing and seeing the finished product.

I got started modeling at 17 when I booked a LEE jeans campaign. They spent most of the day trying to conceal my boobs and make me look younger. Not sure why they cast me haha. I had moved from Northern California to live with some relatives after getting accepted into Orange County high school of the arts. I studied music and theater so I was auditioning for acting jobs as well as modeling.

JB Anytime you build familiarity with a photographer, the chemistry created always amounts to better results. Always great to see the finished product. Every photographer has a different style.

Apart from the LEE Jeans campaign, what would you say are some of your proudest achievements?

KR My biggest achievement of all is the fact that I’m still here pursuing this crazy career. It takes a certain type of person to go on a million job interviews and get rejected by most of them. That’s what modeling and acting is. I’m proud of myself for maintaining my confidence and continuing to go forward.

JB That is so true. Often times rejection can break a person and knock them off their path. Good on you for sticking to your dreams. Nothing but respect and keep pushing.

Which models currently inspire you?

KR I love Miss Tina Louise on Instagram. She’s a mature and stunning model who knows how to pose.

JB She’s stunning. Agree with you there. Outside of modeling, what else inspires you?

KR My friends. I’m competitive af. I love seeing them do well so I have to keep up!

JB  It’s good to have that friendly competition. Helps make life fun.

JB What was the last gift you received and who was it from? ?

KR I went on a first date. He brought me a candle

JB That’s really thoughtful. Is it a scented candle?

KR Haha it is.

JB This is getting interesting. What scent is it? You DO realize this could potentially tell you whether this person should get a second date or not. Scented candles tell all.

KR Haha vanilla orchid. Great candle. No second date.

JB Ouch?. (*Note to self: Don’t get her the Vanilla Orchid candle.)

As juicy as it is to ask why there won’t be a second date (clearly he got the wrong candle), it is a bit personal and we respect your privacy, so we’ll keep it moving.

How would you describe your sense of style?

KR It depends on what I’m doing. I do a lot of shoots so when I have a day off I basically dress like a boy. However, when I go out I like to take risks and wear outfits that are unique and sexy. But either way, it has to include a hat.

JB Is there a story behind the hat?

KR I’ve always loved hats. I have a nice collection and a few favorites. And I hate doing my hair.

JB I feel you there. I hate doing my hair also.

What is your most embarrassing “how to” search?

KR How to adopt a pet fox

JB And what did the Fox say?

KR Hahahaha

JB If you had only 6 months to live, what would you do with the time?

KR Travel the world kissing cute boys..

I’m joking about the kissing part.. Kind of.. ?

JB  Speaking of boys, what’s the first thing about them that draws your interest?

KR Physically the lips and mouth in general. My last two ex’s have huge lips. I’ve always liked that. Mentally I love funny guys. If we don’t make each other laugh then we can’t date.

JB  Laughter is a MUST for almost everybody. Love and laughter go together.

How would you define love?

KR Love is caring for someone so much that you know you wouldn’t die if you lost them, but you wouldn’t want to live either.

Love is letting someone go because they deserve better. And love is a friendship that comforts you thru every tragedy of life.
For me those are the 3 loves I am capable of giving and receiving.

JB  That’s really deep. Love hard or don’t love at all. Only issue sometimes is finding someone worthy of loving. You think they’re the one and they get you a vanilla scented candle.

JB What are the top 3 most played songs in your music player?

KR I don’t usually listen to music because it evokes too much emotion in me. However, when I do listen to music I will find a song that I love and listen to it over and over and over. Right now it’s Sam Cooke Bring It On Home To Me.

JB That is the power of music. It’s supposed to make you feel some type of way. Interesting though, so what do you do in public when a song comes on and strikes a chord in you?

KR I’ve been known to cry in public. Gavin Degraw played at my friends birthday right in his living room at the piano. I was 3 feet away bawling. I’m subtle.

JB Ya big softy!

If you could be any animal, which animal would you choose? And why?

KR Koala bear. So I could sleep all the time and people would think it’s cute.

JB Sleep > Everything

What does your workout routine currently consist of? How do you stay motivated?

KR I’m naturally a thin person, so as long as I workout a few times a week I feel good. I also have a personal trainer who really kicks my ass once a week.

JB If you were to have us over for dinner, what would you prepare for us?

KR I have an almost vegan chili recipe. Everyone I’ve made it for loves it. It has peanut butter and coffee in it.

JB Interesting mix. Sounds good. (Note to self: Be sure to have dinner prior to Karsen’s)

How did you come up with the combination of those ingredients?

KR I have no idea. I just started throwing ingredients in a pot. It comes out differently every time cuz I don’t measure anything.

JB Freestyle, Love it. Zero fucks given.

If you were to have a movie based on your life, which actress would you hand pick to play the role of you?

KR Angelina Jolie. I relate to her darkness. I think she would do me justice.

JB Who is the most inspirational figure you know and why?

KR I don’t think I could pick just one. Different people inspire me in different ways. My dad inspires me to not take things too seriously. My ex makes me want to be a better person, my friend Amber makes me want to be tidier. So many, I could go on all day.

JB How do you see society transcending with new generation constantly being glued to their smart phones and losing touch with the real world? What effect do you think this will have in the next 5 years?

KR People aren’t losing touch with the real world. This is the real world now. I’m a bit of an existentialist so I don’t really know what the point of all this is, but I try not to fight change. That being said, I think we will come back around to engaging with each other eventually. We’re just navigating so much new technology constantly but I really believe humans need social interaction. It might not be in the next 5 years, but we’ll find a way back to actual communication and participation in life someday. But don’t call me. Just text.

JB I think to some extent we all fall a little bit guilty of this, but in the end to each their own. Got nothing against those who feel the need to stay “connected” unless they are connected with everybody but the people around them at that moment. At some point I think we all need a break or escape technology to stay sane.

How often do you experience somebody on their mobile device messaging or updating some social media status while sitting across the table from you, mid conversation?

KR I definitely experience the tops of people’s heads more often than I’d care to. I’m guilty of being a phone addict myself, but I hope I’m not rude about it. I don’t think being on your phone means you’re antisocial. I think it means you’re overly social. Constantly checking what others are doing or seeing who’s liking and commenting on what you’re doing. It’s a good and a bad thing to be this connected at all times. It allows me to keep in touch with people I may have drifted apart from, but it also distracts me from what’s happening right in front of me. Like getting a good look at my friends roots.

JB The end of civilization will be caused by …

KR Diet Coke

I’m joking. We will run out of resources. There’s too many people on this earth.

JB You’re right though, humans are burning through resources as if it was our objective.

List one thing you would do to make the world a better place?

KR Adopt.

Humans need love. I don’t personally understand the desire to have my own children, maybe I will someday, but it breaks my heart to think we are bringing more humans into the world while we have parentless children everywhere.

JB So true. This topic is definitely over looked and we commend you for raising awareness on this issue. More people need to consider this before bringing more people into this world.

In your opinion, what do you feel is the biggest crisis or injustice in the world today?

KR Thank you.

Currently I’m enraged by our own countries rape culture. I keep seeing more and more women being assaulted and the men getting little to no punishment. It’s definitely not the biggest crisis on earth, but it’s one that is important to me. Just recently a judge felt it was more of a concern to ruin the rapists college experience with jail time than it was to give some justice to the victim. It amazes me that we value an experience over human life. Truly disgusting.

JB Again, we commend you for being a voice on an issue that needs to be more recognized. Any injustice, big or small is worth standing up for…especially an injustice against women.

If there is anything you would like to touch on, now is your chance. The stage is yours for this open mic portion.

KR Thank you for taking the time to get to know me. As a model we’re often thought of as walking mannequins, but some of us have actual thoughts. I’ve enjoyed sharing them with you and I hope your followers will appreciate them. Cheers.
